What Could Firearms Licensing Reform Mean for Shooting in the UK?

Firearms licensing remains an important subject for the UK shooting community, and a major HMICFRS review has placed renewed focus on how the current system operates.

The review identified issues including unclear guidance and legislation, alongside inconsistencies in supervision and oversight. One proposal is the creation of a single national firearms licensing authority for England and Wales, replacing the existing 38 police firearms and explosives licensing units.

For those involved in shooting in the UK, any changes to firearms licensing could be significant.

The proposal for a national authority has attracted support from parts of the shooting community, including the Clay Pigeon Shooting Association (CPSA), which has suggested that centralisation could improve consistency and efficiency.

It is important to remember that proposals and recommendations are not the same as implemented changes. Any future reforms would need to progress through the appropriate processes before shooters know exactly what the final system will look like.

For shooting enthusiasts, staying informed is therefore important.
