Gundogs and Shooting: When is the Right Age to Join the Field?

Gundogs are at the heart of every great shoot, but knowing when your dog is ready to join you on a shooting experience is crucial. At Carter Outdoor Pursuits, we’re proud of the high standards across all our shooting estates UK wide — and that includes the care and consideration shown to our four-legged companions.
While every dog is different, most trainers recommend that a gundog shouldn’t join a full shooting day until they are at least 12 to 18 months old. This allows time for their bones to develop properly, and for them to receive the right training to stay focused, steady, and reliable in the field.
Younger dogs often struggle with the stamina required to keep up across varied terrain, and they may find it harder to concentrate during long drives. Rushing this process can result in bad habits and an uncomfortable experience for both the dog and handler.
We encourage anyone considering a gundog to research reputable breeders and experienced trainers who understand the demands of shooting UK traditions. A well-trained dog is a joy to work with and an asset to any day in the field.
At Carter Outdoor Pursuits, we’re proud of our community — a group that consistently puts the wellbeing of gundogs first. Whether you're bringing your dog or simply admiring the skill of others’, our shoot days celebrate the unique bond between handler and dog.
